Deuteronomy 5:1-2
The Ten Commandments are our theological and moral foundation.
Mal 3:6 I am the Lord, and I do not change.

Moses’ begins like his first address (4:1). He urged that the people personally learn these decrees and laws and that they personally adhere to them (v.1). “ listen ” - “ learn “ - “ keep “ - “ do them “

Hear and obey or listen, learn, keep and do them. There are to many that know but are unwilling to obey.

Why does hearing often not result in obeying?

James 1:22
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

He reminded the people that they themselves had received the covenant from the Lord who had spoken to them out of the fire on Mount Horeb (v.2).

The covenant-treaty was made by the nation represented at Horeb, and the covenant remained in force to all succeeding generations until negated or modified by the Lord.

Like Israel we have to honor the covenant to enjoy its blessings.
Matthew 26:28, Mark 14:24, Luke 22:20, Romans 11:27,
1Corinthians 11:25, Hebrews 7:22, Hebrews 8:6, Hebrews 8:13,
Hebrews 9:15, Hebrews 12:24, Hebrews 13:20-21

Those who adhere to the covenant-treaty stipulations get its promised benefits; those who do not get its punishments.

Deuteronomy 5:3
The “ fathers ” were their more distant ancestors, the patriarchs ( 4:31, 37; 7:8, 12; 8:18 ), but our fathers rejected it because of their rebellion.

Deuteronomy 5:4
Is this a contradiction? They never talked or faced God but Moses took the requirements to the people and they accepted them.

Deuteronomy 5:5
Almost the same phrase describes the Lord’s relationship with Moses ( 34:10; Exod 33:11 ).

As soon as Moses mentioned their face-to-face encounter with the Lord at Horeb, he explained that this was through his mediatorship, because of their fear of the fire on the mountain.

The character of Moses’ intercession can be seen in the contrast between the Israelites’ hearing the sounds of the voice of God (4:12, 15; 5:4, 22, 24; 10:4) but not with sufficient clarity to distinguish the words (Exod 19:7, 9; 20:19, 21-22). A similar situation occurred at Paul’s conversion (Acts 9:7).

Deuteronomy 5:6-7
They come directly from the Lord their God—the God who brought them up from Egypt, the land of slavery.

Verse 6 is an summary of God’s relationship toward Israel.
( Exod 20:2; Lev 26:13; Num 15:41; Deut 13:4-5 ).

God says “ I am the LORD your God ” I did this for you and I want you do this for me.

“ other gods ” “ before me ” “ besides me, ” speak of the relationship of the people to God.

You started with a golden calf at the beginning and I want no more of the stuff.

Deuteronomy 5:8-9
Pictures? Anything created?

The making or using idols is total ( in the form of anything ) ( vv 8-9a ).

God is invisible Col 1:15, lives in unapproachable light Timothy 6:16
If we have no knowledge of what God looks like then anything we would create we would be making it to what we want and in all intent be a lie. There is nothing worthy of representing God.

The people either hate the Lord or love and obey Him, and they receive from him punishment or love proportional with their hate or love and obedience.

-------------------

Deuteronomy 5:11
“ You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God ” relates, among other practices, the use of his name in oaths or vows.

Making authoritative and firm statements or promises. the Lord’s name to seal such pledges in a light or frivolous manner or without the intention of fulfilling the oath, vow, or promise. Using the Lord’s name in cursing, magic, divination, personal gains.

We are not forbidden to use God’s name we are forbidden to misuse it. Flippantly “ oh my god “

Jesus taught that his disciples should simply tell the truth and “not swear at all” ( Matt 5:33-37 ).

James 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear — not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your “ Yes ” be yes, and your “ No, ” no, or you will be condemned.

Jesus gives reasons for us not to swear.

The “misuse” or “lifting up” of the name of the Lord for an unworthy cause or in an unworthy manner destroys the proper use of the name in prayer, praise, and thanksgiving. Such unworthy methods are denounced in 18:9-14. They will not go unpunished.

Deuteronomy 5:12-13
Deuteronomy is more explicit than Exodus regarding the Sabbath commandment.

The emphatic statement “ as the LORD your God has commanded you ” ( v 12 ).

The prohibition against making animals work on the Sabbath is also more emphatic here “ nor your animals ” ( Exod 20:10 ).

Not only are certain common draft animals mentioned, but the totality of the Israelite animal holdings are included in “ any of your animals ” ( v 14 ).
We are willing to not work animals but to make people work. “ image of God “

Mark 16:9
When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week
Acts 20:7 On the first day of the week we came together to break bread.

---------------------

Deuteronomy 5:16
After the specific command, “ Honor your father and your mother, ” Exodus 20:12 says, “ so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. ” Moses, preparing the people for the conquest and settlement of the land, added: “ that it may go well with you. ”

To honor is to respect, glorify, and love.

Note both father and mother are to be honored.
Jesus criticized the Pharisees and teachers of the law for setting aside the
commandment to honor father and mother “ how “ ( Corban ) - ( Matt 15:4; Mark 7:10 ) by observing their own traditions. Paul cited this commandment as essential to Christian behavior and productive of well being and longevity ( Eph 6:1-3 ).

The apostle Paul referred to the fifth commandment as “the first commandment with a promise,” the promise being “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth” ( Eph 6:2-3 ).

Paul declared that the commandments are summed up and fulfilled in love toward one’s neighbor. ( Rom 13:9-10 ).

Deuteronomy 5:17
The sixth command a prohibition of murder rather than of killing. Murder is a personal, capital crime. Killing may be done as representative of the nation in judgment on a criminal or in war.

God in his covenant with Noah placed responsibility on man for his fellow man who bears the image of God: “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed” ( Gen 9:6 ). Capital punishment is the penalty for murder ( Exod 21:12; Num 35:16; Deut 19:12 ).

The Ten Commandments do not allow the coddling of the criminal who takes the life of a fellow human being. Yet the person who without hate accidentally kills another is protected (4:41-42).

Jesus on the restriction to murder was teaching that the anger driving one to such violence was sinful ( Matt 5:21-22 ).

Deuteronomy 5:18
Sexual activity between two people that are not married.

“ You shall not commit adultery ” carries an formidable load of social and spiritual implications.

Specific laws regarding male and female relationships are found in Moses’ address in chapters 21-25.

In Leviticus 20; further explication of the prohibition of adultery shows the analogy of the marriage relationship to the people’s relationship to the Lord.

Jesus went beyond the commandment against adultery by declaring that a man who entertains lustful thoughts has sinned before the act or without the act
( Matt 5:27-2).

Deuteronomy 5:19
Both here and elsewhere all thievery is condemned in the OT as well as in the NT. The right to personal property is basic to the whole Mosaic economy.

Stealing required restitution and a severe penalty.

Deuteronomy 5:20
The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth was a most important matter in Israel.

Judges were required by the Lord to make their decisions on the basis of truth without prejudice or partisanship (1:16-17). False testimony, when discovered, brought severe penalty.

God is “ the God of truth ” ( Isa 65:16 ). His words are true ( Ps 119:142, 151 ), and he hates “ a lying tongue ” and “ a false witness who pours out lies ” ( Prov 6:17, 19 ).

If a witness cannot establish a charge made before the authorities but is shown to be a liar, that witness must pay the penalty that he had sought against the person who was charged with the crime ( Deut 19:15-21 ).

If one has evidence of a public charge against anyone and withholds that evidence, “ he will be held responsible ” ( Lev 5:1 ).

Today the courtroom is perverted because society is corrupt.

Deuteronomy 5:21
Coveting “ your neighbor’s wife ” then coveting “ your neighbor’s house “

The last of the Ten Commandments goes beyond what people do; it probes into their minds and desires.

Coveting is an unnatural and excessive desire for something.

Can you covet your own possessions ( Corban ).

To insure family rights after the land in Canaan was allotted, the Lord forbade coveting not only a neighbor’s wife, servants, animals, and whatever other goods he owned, but also his house and land, neither of which any of them had at that time. It was anticipated.

Matthew 22:37-39
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

There are conditional laws which start with “ if ”, “ when “, “ then “.
and unconditional laws such as the Ten Commandments but the fifth Commandment has a promise attached to it.

We must control our thoughts and desires.
We can not substitute our desires for Gods commands.
    Recap
Why does hearing often not result in obeying?

How can we talk to God and know that He is listening?

How can we make sure we hear what God is saying to us?

Today is justice perverted in the courtroom?

Do you think we are living in a corrupt society?

Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven You give us Commandments for our benefit and for us to adhere to all to bring Glory to You. I pray that we come to know this and follow what You want and not our desires. Lord I pray You give us the Spirit of obedience. Thank You Lord.

In the name of Jesus. Amen
